Choosing the right container in sea freight transportation is one of the most critical decisions in the logistics process, both in terms of cost efficiency and cargo safety.
Containers manufactured according to international (ISO) standards vary depending on the type of cargo. Below are the most commonly preferred types and their dimensions:
1. Standard (Dry Van) Containers
This is the most widely used type for general cargo transportation. It is ideal for dry goods such as textiles, spare parts, and packaged food products.
2. High Cube (HC) Containers
Although they have the same base dimensions as standard 40’ containers, they are approximately 30 cm taller.
3. Open Top Containers
These containers have an open roof covered with tarpaulin and are designed for cargo that cannot fit through standard doors or must be loaded from above using a crane.
4. Flat Rack Containers
These are platform-based containers with no side walls or roof, either with fixed ends or fully collapsible.
The table below summarizes the standard internal and external dimensions you can use for your planning:
| Container Type | Length (m) | Width (m) | Height (m) | Door Dimensions | Volume (m³) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20' Standard | 5.89 | 2.35 | 2.39 | 2.34 x 2.28 | 33.2 |
| 40' Standard | 12.03 | 2.35 | 2.39 | 2.34 x 2.28 | 67.7 |
| 40' High Cube | 12.03 | 2.35 | 2.69 | 2.34 x 2.58 | 76.3 |
3 Key Criteria to Consider When Choosing the Right Container:
1. Cargo Weight and Volume: For heavy cargo, 20’ containers are recommended (for axle load balance), while 40’ High Cube containers should be preferred for lightweight but high-volume cargo.
2. Loading Method: If your cargo is too high to be loaded through standard doors with a forklift, Open Top containers should be considered. If the cargo exceeds the width or extends beyond the sides, Flat Rack containers are more suitable.
3. Stacking and Door Dimensions: Always compare the exact dimensions of your cargo with the container’s door opening dimensions. Even a few centimeters of difference can lead to major operational issues during loading.
